Mealworms Are Great Fall Fare!

Mealworms

As the days get shorter and temperatures drop, insects become less numerous. Therefore birds such as Chickadees, Nuthatches, Bluebirds, Robins, and Woodpeckers are having a more difficult time finding their favorite food, just as they are trying to add fat for winter. Why not lend them a helping hand by providing mealworms?

Mealworms are the larvae of the beetle Tenebrio molitor. The larvae stage of the beetle typically lasts for 10 weeks. To maintain the larvae in a state of dormancy, they must be refrigerated. You can keep mealworms for several weeks and they will maintain their dormant state.

Place the mealworms in a tray feeder with steep sides. Our covered Dinner Bell feeder works great, as do our APS trays or our hanging trays.  Birds find the wriggling movement of the mealworms irresistable.

Providing mealworms is a great way to attract species that don’t ordinarily come to seed feeders, such as Western and Mountain Bluebirds, Varied Thrushes, Townsends Solitaires, Warblers, Woodpeckers, and many more. So give your birds the fat and protein they need to prepare for winter - add mealworms to your backyard buffet!
